You don’t have to play the game. That’s what people will have you thinking, like you need to do the same thing they did. All these people playing, you think games intended for EVERYONE to win?

Honestly, I feel like it’s gonna backfire. They’re investing too much. They got all these Airbnb’s in my neighborhood but they building like two hotels in the neighborhood too. Not to mention the local economy on top of all that. Like someone mentioned earlier, service industry accounts for close to half the city’s income but service workers can’t survive on the standard level of income in a city that rent rates have doubled in under 10 years. 2016 also saw the first time ever where NOLA had more people migrating out of the city to live than in.

The local economy isn’t keeping up with the cost of living. Honestly, if I wasn’t on tour like I am, I doubt I’d be able to be a musician (and that be my only job) and live here yet musical culture is the supreme selling point of New Orleans. And it’s not like I’m playing with rinky dink acts either (which is probably why I can afford what I have), I’ve been with established bands that have history and legacy here and I still have to travel to make ends meet.

Fortunately though, playing music is the only thing I have to do. It wouldn’t be too fun to have to do another job and still be a musician.

If you don't have to play the game then whats the play? Whats the alternative?
I agree that it isn't sustainable but they been saying the bubble gone burst for almost a decade now but until then:yeshrug:
Obviously real state isn't a strategy to build collective wealth among Black folks in America but if you got the cash then why not?
And realistically there is nothing we can do about gentrification in cities like NOLA. Some Black folks will make out rich, most will suffer.

What white people says doesn’t matter to me. Vacant housing in Nola is the biggest barrier to gentrification. You can still move damn near any area in the city for a reasonable price. Pricing out hasn’t happened yet. And because there are always slightly more expensive places in a city. It may happen, and soon, but it hasn’t happened yet.
New Orleans has a myriad of problems, I'm not naive. Some of those problems are the reason why you still don't see a full scale "gentrification". There is still not one fortune 500 company HQ in NOLA. So high paying jobs are limited no matter your skin color.

People move here and realize it's tougher to make it here than most cities. Schools are still subpar on avg. and the crime is everywhere.

You can't compare NOLA to Houston, and Atl. Those cities metro areas are quadruple the size in population. It's barely 1 million people in the metro area of NOLA, that includes Jefferson parish and the North shore. Also in Orleans parish there are only about 400k .

What's crazy is there is still a huge need for affordable housing in the city.

You are wrong. I'm from there & all of my family/friends still live there. I worked as an adult in Nola for a few years.

Bottom line, Nola has a disparity between its pay wage and its cost of living. It doesn't matter if the rent cost $1000, if your job is barely paying you $30k/year.

More than that, the people who get decent salaries are typically out of towners. I've witnessed this occurrence at my old job & my friends tell me about this happening currently as well. Nola is not friendly to its locals when it comes to pay...which is why we still have brain drain. People can live a better life in ATL/TX.

There are certain fields that will pay decently here, but that's not the majority of the city.

I don't know why this is so hard to understand for people.

Again, New Orleans barely has retail stores hiring.

New Orleans been done since the Hurricane Katrina...

Disaster Capitalism is the best form of capitalism...

Kills and remove all the undesirables...

Young yuppie cacs and businesses move in, talking about "revitalizing" the city...

Same shyt gonna happen to Houston...

If you don't go no money...it's a hard life outchea...

Funny shyt is...the Black people make those cities cool...

Soon as all the cacs move in...it's just another fukking city...and the cacs will move...and the poor Blacks will move in...creating another hood...
You know it's a wrap once you start to see CACs and "people of color" complain about homeless black men. At that point they can get away with their racism by trying to come across like they care about the public.

Hollygrove is definitely being gentrified. It's funny riding through there and seeing all the white people that have moved in and the newly paved streets. I have a friend who has two plots of land out there and get constant offers to sell their home.
