Looking at today's Hip-Hop/Rap R&B Pop Artist I feel like a lot of them fall short at making solid albums but may have a ton of great hit singles.

With everything going digital and people having the option to buy or stream only singles is the "Album" dead? Or are artist just not that good at making cohesive projects anymore?

Having a lot of fans is the key.
Just cause I like a single or two from a person doesn't mean that I'll spend 60 bucks to go and see the artist. Likewise just cause someone has good albums doesn't mean that the artist will attract a lot of fans.

So in the end there's multiple ways of doing it.

As far as streaming goes, you can have an album with 15 songs streamed by 1 million people 10 times. Or 2 songs streamed by 7.5 million people 10 times.

I study a lot of Dance Djs and notice a lot of them don't drop a album until after they get booked for shows (gain a fanbase).

Usually they'll just consistently drop singles. I also notice this with new pop acts too.

That's EDM, that's another game. They play other people's songs, remixes of other peoples songs etc during their sets. It's not like Kendrick could drop 2 singles and for the rest of the show cover 20 songs by different artists. Of course the big dudes have discographies but in general..

Before Drake did it :ahh:

This is the set of a dude with a pretty solid discography himself.

0:39: DJ SS - Respect to the Following 03:08: Lennie De Ice - We Are I.E. 04:23: Bicep - Nova 06:40: Schatrax - Misspent Years 08:04: Real Lies - North Circular 11:10: The Durutti Column - Otis 13:29: Paleface - Do You Mind (feat. Kyla) (Crazy Cousinz Remix) 16:37: Midland - Reflex 17:50: DJ Wire - Believe Me 19:35: Teebone - Fly Bi (feat. MC Sparks & MC Kie) 22:07: Operator & Baffled - Things Are Never 24:05: New Horizons - Find the Path (In Your Mind) 25:36: Jamie xx - Sleep Sound (w/ Mike Sinner intervew acapella) 28:30: Freeez - I.O.U. (Ultimate Dub Club Mix) 29:30: Jamie xx - Girl 31:26: London Posse - How's Life in London 35:41: Wiley & Riko - Lethal B Diss 37:35: XTC - Functions on the Low 39:23: Ruff Sqwad - Your Love Feels 41:15: Wiley - Gangsters 43:10: DJ SS - Black (feat. MC Power) (VIP Mix) 45:10: Urban Jungle - Back in the Days (Sexy Ladys Mix) 47:03: Nookie - Only You 48:45: Jamie xx - All Under One Roof Raving

so for about one hour he only played 3 of his own songs.
