I totally agree.

Cudi my fave and he barely got bars.

You got to stand out.

And the best way to do that is be yourself

Rap about your own life

Don't try to do what's hot or seek certain beats

Yup. See the thing with Cudi is that people thought the dude is weird. People still do. But he makes creative music and has a certain trademark and atmosphere to what he produces. Same with Drake. Same with Kendrick.

I also wanna say to the OP... You don't have to grow up in the hood to be dope. Be true to how you live and grew up. I lived in the Chi for 5 years before coming back up here and my family was beyond broke as fukk. We had to give up everything to move down there, and my fam besides my dad had to live with my aunt and uncle in a one-bedroom apartment. My best friend at the time was a Four-Corner Hustler. Next closest friend I had was a Blood and another kid who as far as I knew never was involved in shyt. I got jumped a lot. And this was from age 9-13. I never really had nice things, nobody wanted to fukk with me. Even up to recently, it's like that. But during those times, I fell in love with anime and video games and gained a lot of weight. It was like an escape for me. Eventually we moved out the Chi and winded up here, but who knows what could've happened to me if we didn't leave when we did? There's more I could expand on by where I live currently, but the point is.. I could write about struggle cause I know what it's like. If you don't know struggle, then maybe you can write about it from a third-person perspective. Maybe you could write a track about how lucky you were to not know what it's like to go through that. Be you. But be creative. Leave your mark on the canvas of life, tell your story the way you want to.

Oh yeah....for punchlines....It's good to be in tune with pop-culture....movies...shows...whatever is popping....You'd need to build up your reference points so you can come up with fresh play on words....or metaphors and such...

I saw today somewhere that someone suggested reading poetry to help your punchlines and metaphors. I wholeheartedly agree with this and 100% endorse this. If nothing else, you'll learn to write more eloquently or with more meaning.
