it's mathematically possible for every team to go .500 and coin flips decide every spot for the playoffs.

group of death last world cup was somewhat close to having to draw straws at one point to get into the knockout rd

the fukkery of this scenario :wow:

Y'all wanna try and work out the equation?
i'm bored so here goes

their is a maximum of 2460 games (82 games *30 teams)

half will be win and half will be losses so 1230 wins vs 1230 losses

the top 8 team can win between 42 and 82 games each..

if they all win 42 games that 672 wins out of a possible 1230 wins

the other 14 teams will share the 558 wins..

so seeds would be and were making this IDENTICAL on both coast just for the sake of having identical records..

1 = 42 wins - 40 L
2= 42 wins - 40 L
3 = 42 - 40 L
4 = 42 - 40 L
5 = 42 - 40 L
6 = 42 - 40 L
7 = 42 - 40 L
8 = 42 - 40 L
9= 41 - 41 L
10 = 41 - 41 L
11 = 41 - 41 L
12 = 41 - 41 L
13 = 41 - 41 L
14 = 41 - 41 L
15 = 33 - 49 L

Hmm. The thing is I'm not sure if that's possible if we take scheduling into account; the number of games played vs division, conference and league-wide opponents.

why would it change the amount of game played? they all have to play 82 games

Definitely, the number of games would stay the same. And I'm inclined to say that what you've done in is correct.

But I'm suggesting that since the distribution of opponents is not even, it may not be possible for the top 8 teams in each conference to finish with the same record. I'm trying to think if there is some caveat lurking (combination vs permutation which I always sucked at).

Considering
  • 4 games against the other 4 division opponents, [4x4=16 games]
  • 4 games against 6 (out-of-division) conference opponents, [4x6=24 games]
  • 3 games against the remaining 4 conference teams, [3x4=12 games]
  • 2 games against teams in the opposing conference. [2x15=30 games]

your going too deep.. your doing advance stats instead of the basic stats this is..

matter of fact this is the most basic of stats.. simple win and lose columns..

what i did wrong though is saying winning all 82 games.. IMPOSSIBLE.... they will face one and another at least twice..so only 1 team really can have 82 wins

but 42 is very possible because last year the top 8 seeds usually wins at least 40 games..
