…they’re unfairly judging yesteryear’s lyrical stylings by TODAY’S standards?

Cats be like “that/them old ass nikka(s) with that simplistic ‘A-B-C’ rhyme style….(insert current favorite rapper) is way better than him/them.”

I just think cats have to take old school rap for what it is….AT THE TIME, a lot of what was being spit was considered cutting edge…..because there was no PRECEDENT for it.

Best analogy? It’s like watching TV today on a 1960s television…back THEN, I’m sure people were losing their minds on some :krs: shyt when they watched TV, because it was still a new phenomenon to the world (e.g, there was no precedent). Nowadays, however, where you have huge big screen TVs, plasma TVs, portable TVs, shyt like Hula and such….you’re gonna look at that old shyt like “how did y’all even LIKE that?”

I think it’s the same with rap. I mean, ANYTHING with staying power is going to advance for the most part, is eventually going to be improved upon: technology, medicine, etc.

So when you see/hear some of the lyrics from back in the day that NOW look overly simplistic, it’s probably pretty difficult to think of it in terms of “cutting edge”, because here we are DECADES later. So of course it's going to sound dated. But those were dope rhymes back THEN.

While I’m sure there are some who will come in here on some ignorant nonsense ( :stopitslime: in advance), the reality is, different generations of hip-hop don’t have to talk down to one another and try to invalidate each other’s experiences. Someone who goes to a party today and grooves off of Trinidad James shouldn’t be condemned by someone who went to parties back in the day and grooved off of KRS-One, or WHOEVER...and vice-versa.

Hip-hop is the only musical genre where the generational gaps in the fan base be on some "Bloods vs. Crips mortal enemies" shyt, lol….why can’t we all agree that while you may not LIKE someone else’s music/experiences, you can still respect it?

Because as long as we don’t respect the totality of hip-hop, these generational spats will continue and the degradation of our culture will continue. :manny:

Naw it cant be. Mainstream rap in the 90s and even early 2000s was far more intricate + complex than the shyt that's "hot" today

Kids shyt on old rap because

- its kids' prerogative to shyt on everything old, largely to get a rise out of old people
- American culture today has little regard for the past, beyond things to re-appropriate and use as a vehicle to assert superiority over others
- American culture today = microwave culture, any rap that takes more than 1 listen to understand --------------------> bushes

what happens when the new generation doesn't improve upon the lyrics of the past? there are still emcees from back in the day that can rap circles around the new cats but don't get the recognition they deserve because they're seen as :flabbynsick:. I'm 20 but I would rather listen to

isn't this obvious though? :manny:

It's really NOT, though.

Just look at most threads on here about old-school rappers.

The disrespect is laughable.

Either that or they're trolling. :manny:

Yeah, I said something similar in another thread, that's 100% on point. Daps.

It's more apathy for old school rappers than it is disrespect...the average "fukks given threshold" isn't high enough for the average modern day rap fan to actively go out of their way to seek out and then disrespect pretty much the entirety of pre west coast gangsta rap dominance era rap...and those that make the effort to check for it, I'd venture to say are more likely to treat it with an obligatory....if ultimately a bit empty, to the point of cliche...sense of reverence than disrespect...it's not like we're seeing "Maaaan...Kool Moe Dee was wack AS HELL" threads on here everyday

Preach

Yall nikkaz change ya standards on how u judge rap everytime depending on what ur tryna defend

First nikkaz gon talk about..ol day rappers were spitting complex rhyme schemes, but be teh same nikkaz that talk about Pac being the GOAT

Nikkaz aint even being consistent which is why this thread is needed.

Cuz u and I both know..trying to scientifically process this rap sht and remain consistent in such task is not only unnecessary but also impossible.

But I jus tend to ignore the :flabbynsick: nikkaz on here :manny:

lol this is crazy...

80's rap...yes, those were technically 'wack', but you should still appreciate that for what it was & I for one love it...

most of the 90's, the rappers had better rhymeschemes & lyrics than any popular rapper out now though :aicmon:

You tell me people are hating on G Rap, Rakim or even Daddy Kane because of technical aspects...but they dikkride Soulja Boy & Chief Keef...yeah makes sense

It depends on what you mean by "old school". If you're talking about Kurtis Blow or somebody like that, obviously their style was simple as fukk. Rap was more or less brand new back then.

But I don't see anybody championing Kurtis Blow so I'm not sure what you mean.

If you mean "old school" as in late 80s, early 90s, then hell no. All that simple shyt went out the window when people like Rakim appeared.

shyt peaked around the late 90s....somewhere in that era....then started to regress back to damn near Kurtis Blow levels of simplicity.

Not that "more complex = better" but Kurtis Blow should not be giving you a lyrical run for your money in 2013.

Fred.
