What to do when you’re stuck in the uncomfortable, yet all-too-common situation.
by MELANIE LIEBERMAN

According to a study by Harris Interactive, 37 percent of passengers would rather sit next to a smelly adult than a crying baby. So what to do if you're stuck with the latter?

If the child is an infant, try to be sympathetic. Intervening won’t help, but some earplugs might. (We recommend flying with a pair of great noise cancelling headphones or ear buds, like these by Bose and Audio Technica.)

When an older child is misbehaving (kicking the back of your seat, for example), then you’re well within your rights to speak up. One flight attendant recommended speaking directly with the child first.

"It is much [more] real for a child when they are addresed by a stranger." If that doesn't work, try talking to the parent. And if the problem still persists, you should involve a flight attendant to keep the situation from escalating.

In addition to being an authority figure on the airplane, flight attendants often have an impressive arsenal of diversions for children. "Usually, planes [are stocked] with coloring books and things for kids to do," the flight attendant said.

People with kids needs to be segregated from everyone else...

Little kids are POS...

They run, they talk, they make stupid unintelligble noises, they don't understand STFU, they bump into you....

Everyday my perfectly quiet adult time get interrupted with motherfukkers and they kids...

There should be kid only restaurants, kid only shopping centers and shyt...like you shouldn't bring your kid outside just to fukk shyt up for everyone else...

I applaud businesses that ban kids...thank fukking god...

Kids are like dogs...take your kid to the park and tire they ass out before you bring them outside to interact with us adults...

Fail to instill good manners in your children and others will speak up, as they should.

Not only should you not tell me how to handle my child, you better not address my child, either.

Kids are gonna be kids. So if you're mad about a common kid reaction - being fussy or agitated, you're just gonna have to deal with it. But you better not address my kid.

Agreed. Parents are responsible for the behavior of their child(ren). If a parent does not want people to address their child or children for misbehaving, then said parent need to keep their child(ren) in check. No person should have to deal with kids acting up in public, especially in areas like an airplane.

If a child kicks my seat or scream in my ear, then I will respectfully address the parent. If it persists, then I will contact the flight attendant and ask him or her to find me another seat.
