Is it unusual to not remember much about your school years?

I'm 36 and I went to public schools thru 11th grade (stopped going in June 2006). So I've been out of the public school system for 19 years.

And while I remember the schools I went to, like I can call them by name, and I have a memory of what all my schools looked like, I don't remember much else:

•I only remember 10 teachers by face, and 6 or 7 by name. Don't remember anyone else and I obviously had more than 10 teachers from K thru 11

•I don't remember much of what these schools looked like on the interior. I have vague memories but mostly I only recall the exteriors

•I only recall certain classes. Someone asked me once if I took a certain class, which I guess is normal curricula, and I don't remember if I did, though certain courses I know if I didn't take em. But normal curricula classes I don't remember

•my memory of classmates is hazy;

What does this all mean to you guys, and is this unusual? Do you guys have strong memories of school? Trying to explain how I interpret it as follows:

I can remember really liking schools as a really young kid, but mentally and emotionally I was done with school at an early age too. I had a pretty traumatic home life growing up, so while school was a refuge of sorts, it only lasted ~7 hours of the day and I had to turn right back around and go home after. School was a stopgap, not an escape, and I think I subconsciously acknowledged it as such growing up.

I liked aspects of school but most of school life was bullshyt to me. I liked playing sports. I liked the girls. I liked certain things at lunch and I liked snacks from the vending machines. I didn't like much about the actual learning, though I never made poor grades (I was mostly a B/C grade student, never made any F's until 11th and that was mostly because I was truant and didn't apply myself. I probably only had a D grade two or three times. Probably made A's a few more times than that. But made a ton of Boston in classes and then C's would be next highest).

So my disinterest in the learning aspects of school wasn't because the learning was particularly hard to me or I had some kind of challenge or learning disability. It was simply uninteresting and unstimulating.

My teachers were also uninteresting. The ones who I can remember, since I only remember a few, I'm not really sure why they stand out. I had two male teachers my whole upbringing, both black, maybe thats why I remember them, but I only remember one of their names. One teacher was Ms Jackson around the time the Outkast song came out, so I remember her. I remember a teacher who was damn near morbidly obese, so unique characteristic. I remember a 9th grade teacher, she was first teacher I was attracted too and she said she used to fukk on Mike Vick. I remember a fine ass 10th grade teacher and a fine ass 11th grade teacher, but only one of their names.

So I guess the ones I remember, I do because of some unique characteristic. I don't remember anything much about their actual "teaching".

I also got in progressively more trouble at school as I aged. I got in a lot of fights at school. In the bathrooms; in the hallways; in the classrooms; on the bus; in the locker rooms. Most of my suspensions were related to fighting. Got a 365-day suspension for selling weed on campus, later commuted to 30 days, then got expelled like 9 days after I got back.

By the time I was a junior I was truant half the time and in my young drug dealer gang member era, was still selling on campus when I felt like it.

But these are all my memories of school. What's your thoughts on mine and how does it correlate to yours?

Trauma alters your brain’s ability to store and retain memories, in part as a protective measure. Also as you age, I’m guessing our brains probably lumps similar experiences in emotional connection and physical characteristics together -say, years at the same school for example. You may remember distinct moments like a field trip, or a fight, and the more they happened the more they blur in your active recollection.

Your brain prioritizes what's important. most of that information you forgot is useless and you'll never need it the rest of your life. it's normal for your brain to put in the dumpster.

I personally can only remember a handful of teachers by name or face. I have no memory of how any of the elementary schools or middle schools I attended look like. I can still remember the rough layout of my highschools tho.

I can remember only the interesting lessons like when we dissected bats or when I had to memorize a play. Some of the lessons merge since I remember being repeatedly taught matrices at different points in my grade school math career.

@murksiderock , do you remember the field trips?

Crazy thing is I remember every single feild trip like going to the zoo, or the ATL botanical garden, or going to the GA aquarium, going to stone mountain , or going ton"medieval times" .I especially remember when we visited the corporate airport of Chick-fil-A, and the pilots let us fly the plane :wow:

Freshman year, I remember the fight between the two sections that hated each other but had to go to the same school. It popped off bright and early in the cafeteria. shyt was prime time fukkery. It was a high school Royal Rumble.

:blessed:

I remember the pre fight being a fight in the weight room during summer football practice. One breh wrapped a 5 lb weight in a towel after getting his ass whooped, but it was too late. We all knew shyt was only the beginning.

I remember going to dances and the beanie weenie, the Fila and a few other dances being popular. I remember getting my first piece of coochie from an Asian chick who was a senior the summer leading up to my sophomore year. I remember a lot and could go into details.

Do you drink a lot OP? Or was high school boring where you were?

Glad to know its not just me!

I don't remember field trips 🤣 I remember they were a thing, I know I had to go on some. But at this moment I'd have to think really hard, I can't tell you about any.

Nah I didn't drink at all!

I went to one high school in Virginia, 9th/10th grade, and one in North Carolina in 11th. And actually the high school in Virginia was like two schools in one. 8th and 9th grades were at a two story building, but then across the street was the "main" campus, one story, 10-12th grades. The main campus had a different name too but they both connected with certain classes and were kind of unique in that way.

(I went to 8th grade in Memphis so I wasn't at that school for 8th grade).

So that school was kinda boring the one in NC wasn't boring but was really poor, really black, and really eventful.
