The upstate cities have a greater sense of desperation and are more poverty stricken the streets have a certain gloom and it's cold as shyt like 5 months out the year and it's mostly run down two family homes rather than apartment buildings and there's not too many projects shout out to the Perrys in Buff from what I hear most of them got bulldozed.
It's more sleepy and spread out so if you from the boroughs you might not feel danger even tho that shyt is imminent.
NYC is safe if you aren't into some deep street shyt of course and imo that's everywhere although in other cities you have a higher chance of being a random victim of robbery and murder. This shyt isn't even like it was 10 years ago in terms of seeing nikkas mobbing and shyt let alone what it was in the 70's, 80's and 90's. It's a police state people are more focused on money. There's so many people locked up too.
The only thing is that you can't sleep on NYC, yeah the per capita murder rate is low but 300 bodies is 300 bodies. Random foul shyt still happens like the 19 teen jumping in Crown Heights, those Brownsville Woos that got indicted this year had 9 murders and around 35 robberies and shoot outs, the shooting of the Ahk in the grocery store in the North Bronx over a loosie and there was another shooting of a clerk in the South Bronx just this year, the murder outside the Dyckman club like 2 weeks ago, and a social worker got killed in East Harlem not too long ago.
