Is Pujols' contract the worst in baseball (and maybe sports) history?

-Angels are on the hook for $212 million dollars over the next 8 seasons after this season.

-His numbers have steadily declined year after year since 2009.

-He's going to continue to get older.

I would have liked for him to stay in St. Louis, he is still marginally productive as a hitter. But I was always on record saying the I would not want him if it would bankrupt the rest of the team. When we offered $210+ over 10 years I was cringing because I knew he wouldn't live up to that contract after 5 years. It only took one year to see it.

and to think, yall almost paid him a very hefty discount

In retrospect, I'm glad he went for the money. The Cards would not have been able to make many of the moves we've made since he left (re-sign Wainwright, Craig, and Molina to multi-year deals).

I always said that we shouldn't sign him for more than 6 or 7 years or so given his age. I cringed when we bit on the 10 year request.

:whew: not our problem now.

This was sort of a lost year because of his foot, but assuming he can get that taken care of by next season, I can see somewhat of a return to form.

He's never going to be the 8-9 win player he was in STL, but I don't think 3-4 win seasons are at all out of the question. Even last year he gave them 3.7 WAR.

If he were a FA this offseason, I could see him getting 3/$60 from someone.

But yeah, it's easily the worst contract in baseball.

It's not as dumb a contract as the one given to Ryan Howard, but it's going to end up worse.

That contract is an abomination unless he starts using PEDs. Pujols and Hamilton was Anaheim's way of lighting $50 million on fire each year.

The length of baseball contracts (including rookie deals and arbitration) are good for job security and club rights, but sub-par for market value.
