Real answer: it depends. North of Downtown and downtown itself is typically the most expensive expanse of Chicago until you get further west of the lake. There is a lot of affordable places but it depends on how much traffic or public transit you can stand.

Not cheap by any means, but more affordable than NYC or the Bay Area for sure
It used to be. Before COVID it was the cheapest global level city by a wide margin.
Now thanks to asswipes like RealPage rents have jumped up nearly an extra 100% in some areas. My might-as-well-be Mother In Law saw her rent jump from $800 for a two bedroom to $1200 cause the new corporate owners use the dumbass algorithm shyt. No additions, no fixes, just an instant jump in rent once it changed hands.

I saw the above play out way too many fukking times around me on the northside. Building be 100+ years old and doesn't even offer in-unit wash and dry or central air.
My girl moved out the south suburbs with me in the nick of time cause they were gonna go from 750 to 900 for a piece of shyt building where if your top floor neighbor farts you can smell it downstairs. Complete horse shyt.
