Im torn on this but i guess its a combination of both. You're born with the sound of your voice. There's NOTHING you can do about that.
Luther, Teddy P, Mariah, Aretha, Whitney, etc were all born with great singing voices but i guess where im torn at is the difference between simply having a nice voice and being able to SANG. Not sing but SANG
I think most people who can sing well are people who OBSERVED great singers growing up. Take church singers for example. To me, gospel singers are the best singers on earth. They have the most "soul" and it shows in the adlibs and runs that is synonymous with black singers. I think the "technical" aspect of singing can be learned. Matter fact, i think the only way the technical aspect of singing can be learned is by observing others do it and it becoming apart of your own style. Its not a coincidence that Gerald Levert sings just like his father or that Whitney could sing like her mother.
Overall, im still not sure but i think its a combination of both. Any coli vocalists care to chime in?
