Or has it ever been? I've been to several states, and have met all kind of folks from every corner, and with few exceptions, it seems like the NFL reigns supreme almost everywhere there's an NFL team, with maybe the exception of New York (w/ I think the Yanks slightly edging the Knicks). Of course we heavily support the NBA and love it to death, but does the NBA take a clear backseat to the NFL? Mind you, I personally don't agree with this, but this is the way it seems nowadays...

I doubt more black people watch football than basketball breh.
You live in canada bruh stop.

NFL College football then Basketball is distant 3rd.

I don't know a city outside of maybe LA where basketball is the #1 sport

Most brothers I know watch both but I don't really like watching BBall as much as playing it. I won't bash the sport because basketball is one of the GOAT sports to go play with friends but as far as a TV spectacle and the gladiatorial element, Football is superior in every way. Even the breaks are perfectly set to build and release tension while giving you time to get some snacks and digest the last play or anticipate the next one and discuss strategy. CFB and NFL are the ultimate opiate for the masses.
