Is the police and military a path towards upward mobility that more Black men should take?

We hear about "shortages" in both the police force and the military should Black men fill the void and become more visible in each sector?

We are already overrepresented in the military but I think we need to have even higher numbers.

I've pushed the military as a path for years. Specifically the Air Force or Navy. Get you a job that will transfer on the outside world. They have tuition assistance to pay for college while you're in the service. Do your 4-6 get out use the VA to pay for remainder of school if needed then you get a home much easier through the VA and you're not coming outta pocket that much. If you play it right you can even get some disability to help pay that mortgage

Yes the military has provided a pathway for advancement for many Brothas.

If you have the grades in High School the Air Force or the Navy can be good options for Bros into tech and science.

Not too many companies today where you can retire and get full benefits, G.I. Bill for schooling and FHA loans to buy a home.

I'll say, as far as black men who served, a lot of the black men who I respect in my personal life and who I would say is a good example of a black man should be (stoic, intelligent, successful, and no nonsense. Think Roc) all served in the military. I think there are a lot of people who benefit from the experience and become better men from it.

Not to mention, the military training may be of some use in the future...

More black men need to become police. The main reason I didn't take that route is they were taking too long to give me the NYPD test and got into nursing program instead.

This

Black police are much more sane and reasonable when they’re by themselves and not with an officer from another race.

Yes. We don't need any more anti-police talk from men who don't care to keep the women & children of our communities safe.

I'm in NYC these kids join gangs left and right but the most successful gang out here is NYPD.

Yes these organizations carry longstanding prejudices. But the reality is that your immediate circle stands to benefit from your good standing. Your cousins or nephews might make use of those "get out of jail free" cards you'll get.

Myself and my own.
Yes, especially if you are going into medicine if only for the ease in which you can get a residency spot, the fact that they pay for your med school, and all the other perks as well. Air Force probably the best since the other branches require more to give back.
