is there a such thing as originality?

A friend and I were talking about this today.

You as you know yourself depends on your environment, your past, and your genes to live, think and function properly in the present. If you come up with an art, you still had to be inspired to do it, so does that make you original?

The myriad of many returns to one, but where does the one return to?
