Is there such a thing as bad timing in relationships

Like where you try to get with a girl, but in her past she just got out of a bad relationship. Is that a actual reason you can be put in the friendzone or is it always the case that you should be able to break that barrier regardless of how shes feeling.

Ive seen it happen on the other end my friend started talking to this old girl he used to go to high school shes attractive they seem too get along and be cool around each other yet he says she doesnt make him feel like going that extra mile. I guess having that spark in a sense. I think it possibly has to do with him recently getting out of 4 year relationship but that was a half a year ago.

So im thinking did she really miss her chance because of bad timing and does it happen on the other side as well?
