He is a high school senior who is 17. He wants to sign up for JobCorps to get training to do trade(he wants to do plumbing or carpentry) and possibly go out of state like to a HBCU. He plans to pay by being a plumber or carpenter and apprentice. You think it's possible ? He wants to do a 6 month program and I told him he should cut bruhs hair in his dorm :salute: to @Amethyst for letting me know this info.

Why wouldn't it be possible?

The only thing that seems concerning is that I would imagine a job as a carpenter requires long hours and the work might not be too steady.
If he can figure out a way to make the carpentry fit around his class schedule, then more power to him.

If he can do Job Corps for a while as he figures out his next move, that's better than taking 15 grand in loans doing 1 year of college.

17 is really young to make any definitive choices as it is.

True but I rather him have something to fall back on if college don't work out.

I agree.

There's nothing wrong with learning a trade.
I wish I had gone that route when I was young.

Something like plumbing, electrician, carpentry or any automotive trade is something that comes in handy in life no matter what job you do for a living.

I think it's a pretty good idea for him to get a trade. I used to tutor Job Corps students and met some pretty motivated trade students that are working in their field to this day, some with their own business. It's also a low cost way for him to explore some options before college, so he can't go wrong in my opinion.
