i just seen too many caacs jockin it for me to trust it. the chorus is blatant shots fired at upwardly mobile blacks celebrating overcoming their systemic oppression . dont buy the crap defence about the part in the song that references rock singers trashing hotels. first, rap is the new rock as Kanye has said. 2nd, rock aint that big right now so i dont know which rock singers trashing hotels she is referring to, so its a strawman argument.

still. i want to know what the racially conscious coli brehs think.

break down?

I ain't listenin to this shyt

for the record, this is the most popular song in the country at the moment and caac writers are going crazy over it, on some kurt cobain isht. NY Times, New Yorker, Rolling Stone etc. I just wanna know what all these caac critcis and fans like about the song.

just hear the chorus. you dont ned the whole song. basically, she sick of rappers talking bout money, she on some other isht. which sounds cool in theory, but the contexts is horrible and race blind.

didnt listen, but i looked up the lyrics.

[Verse 1]
I've never seen a diamond in the flesh
I cut my teeth on wedding rings in the movies
And I'm not proud of my address,
In a torn-up town, no postcode envy

But every song's like gold teeth, grey goose, trippin' in the bathroom
Blood stains, ball gowns, trashin' the hotel room,
We don't care, we're driving Cadillacs in our dreams.
But everybody's like Cristal, Maybach, diamonds on your timepiece.
Jet planes, islands, tigers on a gold leash.
We don't care, we aren't caught up in your love affair.

And we'll never be royals (royals).
It don't run in our blood,
That kind of luxe just ain't for us.
We crave a different kind of buzz.
Let me be your ruler (ruler),
You can call me queen Bee
And baby I'll rule, I'll rule, I'll rule, I'll rule.
Let me live that fantasy.

Yeah, its questionable but honestly..i think all those things could tie into pop music or the image as well.. or at least the upper class materialism of it all..idk if shes specifically had rap music in mind, i think she was more so denouncing partying and materialism in general rather than materialism in rap, the line "ball gowns" and "trippin in the bathroom" " We count our dollars on the train to the party. And everyone who knows us knows that we're fine with this, we didn't come for money." kinda points to that, imo.

"Black artists and musicians that sing songs like "Royals" that denounce materialism never get pop or urban radio airplay. That's the real racism not the song it self."

seen that comment on an article questioning the lyrics..

She right though.

Hip Hop used to be anti corporate/consumerism.
Rappers nowadays are better promoters/marketeers for corporate brands than the brands own promotion departments.

Bring it back.
