IIRC back during the golden age of hip hop, boom bap was the drum based type beats you would hear from BDK, Kool G, Ra, etc. Thus the name "boom bap" imitating the sound of the drums
However it is seen today as the iconic jazzy sample based style that flooded New York from the late 80s, peaking commercially in the 90s, lasting up until even today.
