Why was he so close to that Chicago drug kingpin? Why was he rappin about dope and stuntin early on? Why did he do a total 180 and become a geek, "Revenge of the Nerd" rapper? Statute of Limitations on dope dealings regarding anything with son been expired, somebody spill the damn beans.

You nigs know everything so I figured if anybody would know it's somebody on The Coli, what's up with boy? I remember some NY rapper saying in an interview they was around Lupe and they know him when he was caked up and ballin before he became the Lupe we know.

According to Lupe himself he grew up in the hood but his father was hell bent on keeping him on the straight and narrow so he never indulged in gangs or drug dealing but growing up in the hood you naturally have some affiliation with those types of characters so he was around the “life” but not OF the “life”

His manager Chilly is who got him his deal with Atlantic but Chilly got locked up for being a big time drug trafficker. Lupe was investigated too but no charges against him were ever officially filed.

He’s been trying to get Chilly freed on appeal since like 2005. Chilly getting locked is what directly led to 1st & 15th not releasing projects from any other artists like Gemini AKA Gemstones, Matthew Santos, and Nikki Jean because Lupe didn’t want the responsibility of running an imprint by himself

Chilly’s trial began in a Cook County courtroom. Prosecutors argued that the six kilograms of heroin found in a storage locker out in the suburbs, worth around $950,000 at the time, were evidence of an even larger trafficking ring that had been operating in some capacity since the ‘80s. They also claimed that Chilly made so much money in the drug trade he was “able to start up a record company.” That company was 1st & 15th Entertainment, which he co-founded with Lupe; Lupe was never charged with anything, but was caught on wiretaps talking about breaking down “whole yellow” and “whole red ones.” He took the stand and argued that the colors were codewords for songs that were being mixed. Chilly got 44 years.

I believe when police raided the 1st & 15th offices they seized a Porsche and jewelry belonging to Lupe. I also think the investigation said Lu and Chill were making Amtrak or Greyhound runs together.

I have no idea what Lu's involvement was in Chilly's drug regime but for all the nerdiness he might display he's always been close to street artists like Glasses Malone, Trouble, Trae, and Stack Bundles.

Yeah, apparently they got Chilly when he was going to take a train ride to Philly, Lu had the other ticket.

nikka said he wasn’t riding no skateboards when he was on 1st &15th, he said that nikka was a dope boy :dead:

Stack used to stay in the same spot as him for a period of time

(Video prolly got pulled from yt)

But I could've swore there was a brief audio wire tape recording of Lupe saying that he had stashed work in a locker.

This was around the time they were investigating Chilly.
Can't find the recording.

But here's the article of Lupe discussing to Chilli about red and yellow tops.

I don't remember if this was closer to the initial raid or right before Chill got 44 years, but at some point, Lupe had a conversation with Chill telling him something along the lines of "You can actually be somebody." His story for a long time was that he saw how negatively he was influencing the people around him and felt more comfortable pushing positivity instead. While that may be true, I think he conveniently left out that cleaning up his image by building a nearly curse-free debut around a skateboarding song helped to shake the feds off his trail. This was just a theory of mine until he more or less confirmed it in one of his instalives during the height of covid. There's obviously a version of F&L full of nothing but lines like "If you pull the guns out, all the cowards will flee, cause they can't front if they lose the power to breathe", but they took a gamble with Kick, Push and the rest is history. To be fair tho, the nerdiness was always there in small doses, just embraced it more over time.
