- "Selling our business for a profit is cool. We have QC the black record label selling for a big profit"
- "But at the same time we as Black people have to shoot a little higher to own everything. We need to own the entire infrastructure of our content"
- "Look at when most black film makers want to make a movie, they have to shop to a bunch of production companies asking 'can I money to make my movie', 'can I please have money to make my movie' etc etc"
- "Then you look at Tyler Perry. He takes a check out of his back pocket, then he goes to his studio and films his whole project in his studio, then he puts it out on a streaming service he owns 50% of. Then on top of that he licenses his content to TBS to Lionsgate to OWN and to BET"
- "Now the billion dollar industries are confused on how to exploit this type of set up, because they can not. Tyler Perry owns every level of the Supply Chain from inception to distribution"
- "Black people have to do this Social Media, the Music Industry, Film making, etc"
- "If only the creators of Hip Hop Kool DJ Herc and Grandmaster Flash trademarked the culture of Hip Hop, imagine where Hip Hop would be now, and how financially set all of the pioneers would be now"

Image is everything. And the entities that own exploit our image and likeness for their own pockets are making BILLIONS off of us

We always have these convos where we make basic shyt sound like a groundbreaking discovery

"maybe we should own businesses and employ our own people"

"maybe we should educate our own children"

"maybe we should love each other"

"maybe we should be self-sufficient"

Basic shyt that every other group understands at an elementary level.

Pardon my frustration.

They’re doing that with the Detroit hood movies and shows on Tubi and Amazon. I know they don’t own platforms but that might be in the works once they get enough content.
This, and some of the Detroit Tubi movies have excellent production values & some have good writing. I believe it's only a matter of time before the Detroit movie scene really pops off and brings Black wealth to the city.

For all this stuff to happen there would have to be a collective effort and sacrifices to be made. I think this could be done with about 30% of black people. But for 60% and more I think it’s a dream and just a talking point.

Hopefully Nollywood gets real big and we can go there as an alternate source for production funding. May give us leverage back here in the US too.

Well if you're hoping that Nigerians save Black American media with their money that's not going to happen. Because they're going to want to promote their own thing which is to be expected since they're financing it.

What's needed is domestic funding which is what we already have with 50 Cent and Tyler but more rappers and wealthy Black people should do that so begging for funding from outsiders is no longer needed.

Well it's definitely ridiculous because Black people already had all of this but gave it up to try to force assimilation with cacs which was never going to happen. So now Black people are rediscovering the obvious such as:

Hey maybe we should control our own economy.

And hey maybe we should finance our own media and stop begging outsiders to do it for us

Any good Detroit hood movies on Amazon that you recommend?

To be honest, if you want me to be real, I think as far as entertainment goes, the bigger blame goes with the Black elite and rich than the masses. The only thing you can really expect of the masses is to come out and support Black entertainment and on balance, the masses have been doing better at that and even calling out suspect astroturf 'Black' movies.

The problem is that all you really would need is a Black finance type like BET's Bob Johnson, Robert Smith or Melody Hobson to set up a venture capital/private equity type fund targeted at Black entertainment investments, get a bunch of rich Black folks and institutions that want the PR of supporting Black folks and then use that fund to select and fund projects.

Why this has not been done, especially by Bob Johnson who has a huge family office and his own private equity group RLJ Equity Partners, is a question I cannot answer. Maybe they have behind the scenes? I worry sometimes that the Black elite focus on either philanthropy/social entrepreneurship or nothing at all. Don't get me wrong, that is great and we need the philanthropy, HBCU investments need to come primarily from Blacks etc. But why the hell can't promising young Black entrepreneurs look to Black owned investment vehicles to start or scale up companies?

In Hollywood, the only way these big non-Disney action flicks get funded is with PE investors like Dune/RatPac Entertainment joining with other investors and sometimes studios. It would be interesting to ask Tyler Perry and 50 Cent if this is going on and if not, what have they heard behind closed doors.

The reason I brought up Nollywood was not that I wanted to rely on outsiders, but I figure the Nollywood investors are less risk averse and willing to gamble since that is basically what you do making films in Nigeria. Rich Blacks may be too conservative and want to invest in 'safe' stuff (i.e. large non-Black enterprises) and not entertain this.
