listening to illmatic for the first time in a while.. I was struck by how impersonal it was. illmatic is pure emceeing at its best and nas paints a gritty picture of queensbridge (and by extension nyc as a whole). the dopeheads, the ends, the corrupted youth, the actions & consequences, etc. but nas rarely ever gets personal. he doesn't really put himself out there, he's just speaking on the things he's seen growing up in such a hectic environment

my favorite nas album isn't even a real album at all, more of a compilation (lost tapes). thats the real nas behind the young, cocky braggadocio rhymes

The first album is rarely the most personal. Later on, once they start running out of things to talk about, rappers usually go more in depth
