Israel gives China keys to its largest port. The U.S. Navy may abandon Israel

Israel's former navy chief of staff and chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission Shaul Horev warned about China’s forthcoming management of the strategic port of Haifa. The deal was agreed to three and a half years ago by the Transportation Ministry and Port Authority without the input of either the National Security Council or the navy itself, the latter of which is supposedly concerned because Israel’s Nuclear submarine fleet is based next to the port.

Their Nuclear subs are key, as Israel has never signed onto any of the international Non-proliferation treaties

“When China acquires ports,” Horev said, “it does so under the guise of maintaining a trade route from the Indian Ocean via the Suez Canal to Europe, such as the port of Piraeus in Greece. Does an economic horizon like this have a security impact? We are not weighing that possibility sufficiently. One of the senior American figures at the conference raised the question of whether the U.S. Sixth Fleet can see Haifa as a home port. In light of the Chinese takeover, the question is no longer on the agenda.

Essentially a faction of Israel’s permanent military, intelligence, and diplomatic bureaucracies wants to join China’s One Belt One Road (OBOR) global vision of New Silk Road connectivity while the other wants to retain Tel Aviv’s stalwart pro-American foreign policy by preventing this, hence the public friction over this issue.

interesting stuff going on here. What's going to happen if Israel, "Our Biggest ally" - Trump, sides with China going forward???

Wouldn't be surprised if that realist section of Israel's "deep state" is also the section that wanted to keep the Iran Nuclear Deal in place

Israel has been an ally of the US in name only. Association with them has not provided this country with any tangible strategic benefit. The dollars will keep flowing that way regardless, though.
yup as long as AIPAC and rich jews use their money and influence to keep american politicians in line israel doesn't need to behave like our friend. never forget the uss liberty.

IMO, this is more to get China in Israel's sphere of influence so if a conflict with Iran arises, China will have enough incentive to stay out of it and not support Iran.
I don't think the current admin is going to let this deal go through. This is probably the most pro-US cabinet in recent years so who knows.

Also, the responses in this thread and pretty much any Israel thread are beyond ignorant and lack any sort of critical thinking.

I could see the Israelis thinking that but Iran is a big source of oil, a huge node in the Belt and Road, has many Chinese investments, and is where de-dollarization is being experimented with.

Beijing would exhaust all diplomatic measures to avert a conflict.

I think the Israelis want to get keep up with the Chinese military tech esp as they close the gap with the US.
