“Insecure” star and creator Issa Rae is planning a re-imagining of the 1996 crime heist thriller “Set It Off” which starred Jada Pinkett Smith, Queen Latifah, Vivica A. Fox and Kimberly Elise.

Syreeta Singleton (“Black Monday”) and Nina Gloster (“Star”) have been hired to pen the script for the new take. Rae will produce with an eye to star while Montrel McKay will also produce.

So Issa will probably take Jada Pinkett’s character. Lena Waithe for Queen Latifah’s character maybe? Keke Palmer for Vivica’s character and the chick from Beale Street for the single mother character.

It could work given the right script:manny:

Also let Blair Underwood come back as his original character. Dude still looks young and that was the last time he wasn’t playing a villian:lolbron:

set it off doesn't need a remake. while it's a personal favorite, and a film i think still stand up, in the grand scheme of film canon, nothing about it says "remake". it also worked due to the era we were in. you could easily just create a whole new heist film

A sequel would be better imo. Have Jada in it.

I think the themes of inequality and hopelessness of poverty and low wage jobs resonate even more now, and with the right direction and script, it could be great. Just the way "Insecure" was shot, makes me think Rae has an eye for LA at night, especially.

GIven her age, (and mine) clearly this is a passion project for someone who grew up loving the original, whether you watched on VHS in 97 or in theaters in 1996

Hmm...
What would the story be?

Jada runs out of money...or maybe you pick up with Jada being let out prison after 15-20 years. Links up with a group of friends (issa and gang) who looked up to her story

maybe Jada being let out of prison. After she went to Mexico, got seeded up by a mexican bruh and snitched on her afterwards. He kept the bread. She got deported and had a baby in jail (daughter). Jada and the Daughter and her crew go rob the dad to get her bread back? :yeshrug:

See how easy that was to make a whole different watchable heist movie? Set it off ended perfectly. No need to remake it. They need new ideas from these young people. Stop piggy backing classics

But this is literally what cats said when they did all female Ghostbusters and Oceans movies. Now an actual all black, female heist movie is brought up, being made by a young, talented black woman, and they should just make a new heist film? I really liked Widows and think there's room for original all female cast movies, but there's no reason to not make a Set it Off reboot, especially since I think Issa probably actually respects the original and isn't just looking for a cash grab.

What? ghostbusters and oceans are franchises. Kinda ok with them making more installments, although unnecessary, and I did have a problem with the intentional female pandering. Widows was just ok and apparently people are enjoying hustlers. I wouldn’t have an issue with a sequel, prequel or original bank robbery film, but set it off doesn’t need a remake regardless of Issa running it or not :manny:

The vast majority of.movies don't need, nor benefit from, a remake. I think Set it Off is underrated enough that a modern retelling could reach a new audience while having it's own statement to make. I brought up GB and Oceans because they were viewed as pandering. This wouldn't be. I also think a move about black women made by a black woman would be well received and thoughtfully produced. I would never ask for a The Wood remake, for example, because it's a more well known movie that I don't think could be remade while adding anything of note. Black, female, heist movie is a much narrower niche.
