well... if this is what you do why ask...

Since this is a hustle there's no point of trying to do it legally cause it'd cost too much for the client. with that said there'd be no point of providing the windows 7 dvd's.

the dv2500 is one of the worst laptops ever made and surprised there're some still around. more than half of them should be going out pretty soon. about $100 per laptop is fair and call it good.

ohh they don't have a windows license?

My bad, everything i posted is a direct quote

catch the edit in my post.

the dv2500 is probably a windows xp laptop so the license is xp. i'd just get a pirated windows 7 copy and call it good.

fukk it, $100 per computer sounds good
i short usb ports of a "speciality" laptop computer doing some stupid shyt. i jumped on craigslist and saw a windows 7 15.6" toshiba 3gb laptop on there sitting for over a week for $100. i bought it for $80.

the dv2000 has been out a while and the problems it's gonna have are dust/heating problem. batteries going out. they'll need memory upgrades. $100 is fair for now because they'll need more work being done. when it's all done you'll make $300+ per laptop. viruses, screen going out, hard drive going out (another reinstall), battery replacement, charger..

edit: if you must provide windows 7 dvd. get the enterprise edition so you don't have to deal with the license keys of the professional edition.

Damn..IT is easy money.

I cant believe someone would pay to get basic stuff like this done. Installing programs is basic stuff.

Charge $500 and most importantly build that relationship so they would call you again next time
This.
Speaking more in terms of long term....

If there's room to become the "on call IT guy" try cultivating that relationship. Get them the "discounted rate" this first time around.

When I say that I mean draw up an invoice/receipt with slightly higher prices, then tell him you're knocking off like 25-35% off his initial service.

you really want to get smart with it you'll ask him to sign a service contract of sorts where he'll call you later for work. :manny:

I'm unclear; how would the scam work? Like what is the mechanism by which the scammer would take advantage of OP

It could multiple things:

1- dealing in stolen merchandise. They let the him activate the laptops in case of any antitheft software or hardware is present. If he successfully does it, he gets paid. If he gets busted, the people who contracted him out walk way free.

2-could be a Nigerian scam type of thing where they ask for banking or sensitive information up front as collateral for giving him equipment.

3- the laptops carry out instructions when running which commit illegal activity, considering he might be connected online to download that software requested, it would be easy to have background processes carry out tasks.

Ask to be paid in whores, breh...

That's something I could do in less than 3 hours....

How long would it take you, then figure out what is that time is worth to you.

Is it for a business or an individual?

I searched online a bit and yup classic check cashing scam... they are going to send a check with extra money that they'll ask you to cash and send the extra money back to them... your bank will give you the money, you'll send them the extra cash back, and later you'll find that the check bounced!
