When I was like 7 my mom and dad gave me the racism talk and they were crying. Now I know why.

My nephew (11) was around when we were watching the O.J. doc and it was at the Rodney King part.

Nephew: "Oh my God. He must have done something bad."

I had to explain that he was speeding, but he could have been riding a bike on the sidewalk and the same thing would have happened. He didn't really understand so I had to break down how it works with cops and explain all the different "rules" we have to live by to prevent it all and make it home alive.

It just hit me how sad it all is because of how innocent he is.

After that I looked at my sister like :mjpls: why have you not taught him this already? :dahell:

Parents of the Coli, educate your little ones right now!

OP illustrates to me how important it is for men to have that talk with their children, especially their sons. With all these boys growing up without fathers, men in general should take oppurtunities to have these talks with the youth. I love how we call it, "that talk", too, cuz its more like a lifetime conversation. I'm a grown man, but I still listen to my father's stories even when I've heard em before. Hearing first hand experiences from a Black man coming into his own as a man in the late 50's, early 60's, can help one put a whole lot into perspective. That said, considering how many from our generation have died or been locked up, its like a whole generation of missing voices and mentors. These women cant do it alone.

I grew up watching the og roots as a kid. Watching movies about racism and colonialim. Learning about it in school. I don't think there was ever a singular talk. It's been a part of my awareness ever since I could remember.

yea,i was gonna make this same thread eventually; I have a 3year old daughter and one day im going to have to explain that white people are "different" and that they see her as "different". It saddens me when i think about it because kids are so innocent/pure and once you become aware of the evils of the real world that innocence is gon forever

This should be a required watch for every young black person:
