It took me some research to learn Marley Marl was Rza before Rza essentially. Who was before Marley then?

So Marley Marl produced for Kool G Rap, and Big Daddy Kane - whole albums. Then the Juice Crew. Rza produced for Wu Tang then all of the Wu Tang's solo artists.

Marley Marl upgraded his style to produce for Lords of the Underground - completely innovated rap.

My question is this - in terms of rap history did any other producer take the helm like this? Produce for whole crews?

Perhaps Ced Gee from Ultra and BDP? But that would have been later.

Hip hop music and the producion process was changing at a rapid rate in the 80s....even the shyt in '84 and '85 is very different to to the music from '87 and '88/

The role of the producer was still being formed during this time.
