Greg Scarpa was such a crazy motherfukker that the FBI hired him to help him solve the Mississippi Burning case. Yes, the case that the movie is based off of. He was hired to go down there and literally torture KKK members until he figured out whodunnit since the FBI could not use these tactics. It worked and the FBI arrested the suspects. This gave Greg Scarpa carte blanche to do whatever he wanted in the Mob for decades.

What's even crazier is that Greg hated black people so much that when he got sick and needed a blood transfusion, he refused to use blood from a blood blank because it could have black people's blood. He got a transfusion from family and friends...and was transmitted HIV from one who was a family friend who was bodybuilder that shared needles.
