That was one thing I did when I was younger. I would buy the CD and look at the booklet to see if there was samples and then try to hear the originals. With the help of the internet we can find a lot more music than before. Then people wonder why I have artist like Minnie Riperton, Hall & Oates, Michael McDonald, Issac Hayes, Bobby Womack, Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, & Brook Benton in my CD case.

I've Been Loving You Too Long - Otis Redding - YouTube

:ohlawd:

that was my grandma's favorite song....rest her soul....:to:

:sadbron: I came in here to post this.

I don't know. I don't think it's even ignorance or their lack of respect for the older artists'. Kids these days have far more access to music of the past then any other generation. All they need is for someone to name drop a good artist and all of a sudden they can discover a whole new world

Alot 80's babies had access to that music because we heard our grandparents jamming it, same thing with the New Jack Swing era because our parents listened to it.

I remember helping my grandparents clean their house on Saturdays and they would play Johnnie Taylor, Muddy Waters, Peggy Scott Adams, James Brown etc.

I watched the stax documentary with sam jack narrating last night. Honestly, that shyt changed my life and inspired me further. So much black pride....
rode around bumping that otis redding today and old heads were coming from everywhere dapping me up and showing love. I think our generation needs to do more to reach back to our older brothers

My dad told me something a couple days ago that really made this 'New School/Old School' dichotomy a bit more poignant:

The reason most of 'our' music lost it's soul is because most of the creators don't believe they have a soul.

:ohhh::ohhh::ohhh::ohhh::ohhh::ohhh::ohhh:

Realest shyt ive read this yr. Otis honestly inspired me to start working on a souls of black folk 2, exploring the definition of soul and the origins and how the others yearn for it.

Adele can sing, but she will never have the soul the staple singers had. White folks eat it up, and clive davis pimped it out. We misinterpreted gangsta rap as a form of soul music and though the white consumers eat it up it does not define us as a people like the music of yesteryear

look how much happiness and love is around them black folk.:bow: No violence, no mean mugging, no stuck up people. The black love of the 60s and 70s was unparalleled.

Now we have left is a b*stardization of rap music on our airwaves and the negativity of materialism, disrespect, and ignorance. What happened? :what:
