Your great grandma was probably alive at the time. It wasn't that long ago.
No but America specifically Chicago are the pioneers first skyscraper in either 1885 or 1889.
London by the 20s had em..what everyone needed was elevators..once they made those it was all straight to the sky.

Was infrastructure between the north and south even more different In the 1880s than it is right now ?

Well Atlanta was still recovering from Sherman getting In That ass and burning it to the ground
Then reconstruction and then they had to rebuild the rails down south. Whites became sharecroppers in the 1880s. Yea South was very much rural still..
HOWEVER the first skyscraper in GA I believe. Like was in 1892 ..so they still had capable cities...just still largely rural outside of the major cities.
