MIAMI (WSVN) -- Miami Police are investigating after a man was fatally shot outside his apartment, Friday morning.
The shooting occurred at Northwest Second Avenue and 68th Terrace in Miami, at around 1:30 a.m.
According to police, 36-year-old Michael Antoine Jackson was pronounced dead on the scene. His father said he was sleeping when he heard approximately 13 gunshots from the second floor apartment. "I heard the shots go off," said Grant Jackson Sr., the victim's father. "Then I looked out the window and, you know, it was about 13 altogether, so I fell on the floor. When I got back up, after the shots was gone, I seen somebody in all this black running down the street, and when I looked down on the ground, I seen my son."
Family members said Jackson was returning home from a trip to the grocery store. Jackson Sr. said his son's twins were sleeping in the apartment when their father was shot. "He said, 'Daddy, can I get $1.50?' I gave it to him, and that's the last time I saw him until I saw him laying down on the ground over there," he said.
Officials do not have a motive for the shooting, but Miami Police Sgt. Freddie Cruz did say that Jackson had been shot at multiple times.
Jackson leaves behind nine children, including the twins. "He was a good dad," said Teranice Davis, mother of two of the children. "He was a good dad. He was a good man. I don't know. I just want to understand why this had to happen to him. I was in my room when the gunshots went off. I laid over my babies because the bullets just sounded too close. I laid over the babies, the kids, just to make sure it wasn't coming in the window at my babies."
With the unfortunate rise in shootings in the neighborhood, Cruz said, the violence needs to be put to an end. "The community is tired of seeing this. We're tired of seeing this gun violence. We need to put this to an end," he said.
"I would tell him that I love him because that's my son, that's my baby," said Jackson Sr. "Even though he's 36, that's still my baby."
Family members are pleading with the public to find the person or persons responsible. "Whoever did this just, please, just turn yourself in," said Davis. "It don't make no sense. It don't. Y'all took an innocent man away from his kids, his kids, all his kids. Why?"
If you have any information on this shooting, call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS. Remember, you can always remain anonymous, and you may be eligible for a $3,000 reward.
