Vince was a Punk fan. In fact, he was the one begging for Punk to stay when he wanted to quit. [This is all in Punk's words I should add].

Why they pushed Punk down the card while he was the World Champion still doesn't make sense. :yeshrug:
Pure stupidity probably is the likely answer :bryan:

Looking back, the writing was on the wall at that Survivor Series match with Berto.

Cole saying "Nice robe, ya bum" as Punk, wearing a hoodie, came down to aisle to challenge for the title was :mjlol:because it made him look like he only ever shops for Vince approved chopper suits and sport coats, but super:snoop:because they were cutting his legs out from under him, at the beginning of the longest title reign in the company's modern history.

Also :scust:at the way they did Howard Finkel that night,

It's easy to say Vince was a Punk fan, especially since everyone knows Vince likes it when you "stand up to him".

But there's only so much "standing up to the boss" you can do before he gets tired of your shyt.

shyt is legit weird in retrospect

I think this feels weirder NOW because we've seen how internet darlings get legit pushes and are booked on top. But we gotta remember that 2012-2014 were the finals years of Cokeboy not fully trusting "indy guys" and Cena being the main focus of the company. At the first sign of mediocre numbers - no matter how horrible the booking was - he went back to Cena.

Like, that period had to happen in order for the Rollins, Owens, Styles, Balors and Ambrose to get showecased as legit main eventers (except during Mania season :pachaha:) and for Cena to finally step down as the only real top guy.

I agree that this was a fukked up mentality but I don't find it weird at all. That's how Vince used to operate. If anything, this current Era is the bizarre one with "non traditional" guys getting the top belt and spots for extended periods of time even though they have mediocre at best results in attendance, ratings, merch, etc.

IIRC Punk was seen as the "1B" babyface to Juan's "1A" so he kept being pushed down the card. That's why Punk decided to turn heel and he actually started to main event big shows (including against "brand new" Ryback).

Main Event for TLC was Cena vs Ziggler for the MiTB briefcase :dead:

:dahell: Punk wasn't even on that show because he was injured.

To me the biggest slight to him was the RAW MITB match being the main event instead of the NO DQ match between Punk and Bryan. Specially because the Punk/Bryan/AJ angle run for solid couple of months and it was the final encounter were the babyface was booked to win. Putting a multi man match on top was :why:

Cole - "...Yup it's clobbering time...His war call is from a comic book character :martin:"

King - what's wrong with quoting the thing :dahell:

Wasn't Cole still on his dreadful heel run during that time? :jbhmm:

He didn't help Punk but he buried the whole roster every damn match - except the Miz - for like 2 years. But I might be wrong, he might've turned back to "normal" before Punk's reign:patrice:

Vince feels this innate need to destroy everything he didn't create. Also, when hogan and Austin and rock all gradually left for one reason or another, Vince was in a bind because they lost such a massive star. His response since then has basically been make sure nobody becomes that big a star so that they have to rely on him for booking and pay so that he has all the leverage on them in negotiations. Also the obvious being that he didn't fit the mold of what Vince wants in a top guy.

Yes but it was a testament to how Cena was booked like he was the actual champion.

But almost every PPV of Punk's reign, I would sit around like "why is the WWE Title match in the middle of the show :why: "

But yeah that Over The Limit, No Way Out, MiTB stretch was so weird, how Cena vs Johnny Ace and Big Show vs Cena in a Steel Cage gonna main event over the WWE Title?

Looking back on it - he probably was. I don't think he was a face again until Jerry decided not to go into The Light on Raw. :ehh:

I always just assumed that Vince was operating him like a puppet to get his backstage inside jokes in

If y'all just hit wiki and scroll through some of those 2012 cards, you're gonna :russ::russ::russ::hhh::picard::russ:, other than Shield matches, which were late in the year. Sheamus vs Ziggler opened one of those PPVs for the WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP :mjlol:

Sheamus and Alberto Del Rio fought at 4 straight PPVs, Sheamus walked out of each one as the WHC :russ:

Sheamus was one of the strongest booked champs in recent memory

They gave literally zero fukks about Punk. For him to be champ for so long he's definitely the least important feeling champ they've had in recent memory.

Dude was curtain jerking to damn near anything Cena was doing :heh:

Well he wasn't supposed to turn heel or be champion past July 12. He did the heel turn for the Rock match....it was gonna be Bryan if he didn't turn. So his title reign length was just because he was a Rock Rumble opponent.
