Street's Disciple is bogged down by the fact that there's too much going on with that album. I mean, it's great because it showcases Nas's versatility, but it lacked consistency and wasn't cohesive. It's still the most interesting album he's released (nowhere near best, but it's interesting). I mean, "Sekou Story" and "Live Now" had crazy storytelling and he experimented on both by doing the Scarlett character. Then there's the play on religious themes right down to the artwork.
I feel like Untitled was pretty focused for the most part, but it's themes that he's explored before and executed better.
I still feel both albums spoke to the time they were released. They only seem ahead of their time now because not much has changed. In 2004, it was decision time because many were fed up with the Bush Administration, but also felt like John Kerry wasn't offering much of a better alternative. People were already saying "why doesn't Obama run" and he was running for Senate at the time. In 2008, it was another election year and Obama was running. Oh and Hillary ran to (like I said not much has changed). Police officers were killing unarmed Black men and women (Sean Bell and Katherine Johnston among others). Nooses were being hanged on historical Black figures at colleges. Black college females were being called "nappy headed hoes" by the likes of Don Imus. Genarlo Wilson was wrongfully accused of raping a white girl. There was the Jena Six. Curious George posters bearing Obama's likeness were displayed at a restaurant chain.
