The biography of James Yancey (!!!) will be released February 1st. The author Dan Charnas is a professor at NYU/Tisch’s Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music, who also wrote an excellent chronicle of the business of hip-hop called The Big Payback. We all spoke to Dan in the years he spent independently writing this book and were impressed with both his understanding of the work of J Dilla and his ability to make sense of his timeline.

Ordered my copy of rappcats. As a breh who was a Dilla fan in real time - very excited to read it :obama:

Charnas wrote the book that the VH1 show 'The Breaks' was based on too. I'm still mad as shyt that show got cancelled.

saw they had an audiobook of this on amazon...they could have capitalized and released some dilla beats for the B side of the audiobook as a reference guide with the text so readers can follow along to the progression of his beats
I have both the physical copy of the book and audio book. When the narrator of the audio book is talking about particular beats of Dilla(and this is done with Pharcyde's "bullshyt") they will play the beat in the background. I personally still love reading books but will listen to a couple chapters at the gym on the bike and in the sauna.

yeah, that's why I don't upload audiobooks anymore I have damn near 150 of them from my audible account. NO lie. And it's probably more. At the same time, I have hundreds of books so I think producers of content should be paid for it. Thats why I still buy albums of my favorite artists

Imma place my order for it on Amazon today. I’m gonna hit up my favorite Black bookstore later today with my friend after I’m done with work so maybe I’ll see it there if Dilla Time has been distributed to brick & mortar bookstores. I absolutely LOVE Dilla’s sound, most especially the sounds he used from 1996 to 2002.
