J.R. Smith will not opt in with the New York Knicks, declining his player option of $2.9 million, a league source confirmed with ESPNNewYork.com.

Smith will officially announce the decision before June 30, making him an unrestricted free agent.

It was reported by the New York Post last month that Smith was "expected" to opt out. The Knicks can re-sign Smith for $4.9 million using the Early Bird exception, with standard raises over four years.

It matters..but when it truly mattered, he let his squad down.

So did Harden, but when OKC thought they could survive without him, half the forum complained.

At the end of the day we're talking about a 6th man of the year who if he stays in NY will have a starting salary of $4.9 mil. Paid what he should be paid and playing the role he should be playing and Knicks fans will tell you, it's not his fault there's this incredible burden of responsibility on him.

Smith for as inconsistent as he plays, is hardly stealing money at what the Knicks could offer him.

If he opts out just to sign that contract rumored a few weeks back that is good for the Knicks. They weren't gonna find anyone else who could give them 20 off the bench on any given game. JR has his faults but for the most part he's usually ok in his role as 6th man. Don't know what happened this postseason though.
