Box Office: ‘Den of Thieves’ Outshoots ’12 Strong’ on Thursday Night

Heist thriller “Den of Thieves” took in $950,000 on Thursday night, edging Afghanistan war drama “12 Strong” with $900,000.

STXfilms will open the R-rated “Den of Thieves,” starring Gerard Butler, O’Shea Jackson Jr., and Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, in 2,342 locations on Friday with a projected opening in the $9 million range
. That’s similar to the launch of Open Road’s crime drama “Sleepless,” which opened on the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend last year with $9.8 million in its first four days, including $410,000 in Thursday night previews. Liam Neeson’s “The Commuter” opened a week ago with $700,000 in Thursday previews on its way to a $15.8 million Friday-Monday.

Den of Thieves pulled off an upset with the larger Thursday evening debut of this weekend’s new releases, pulling an estimated $950,000 according to various sources. That’s well ahead of the $340,000 earned by Triple 9 two years ago (which had widely been presumed to be the best comparison title entering the weekend), while also besting The Foreigner‘s $775,000 start last fall. Initial forecasts for the weekend had suggested an opening weekend in the $5-7 million range to be likely, but it now appears the film will easily eclipse that if it can hold up beyond last night’s turnout.

and now

Sony’s sturdy “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” is heading for a third straight weekend victory at the North American box office over new entries “12 Strong” and “Den of Thieves,” early estimates showed Friday.

“Jumanji” was heading toward $18 million at 3,704 locations, while the Afghan war drama “12 Strong” looked likely to finish with about $15 million to $16 million at 3,002 venues. STXfilms’ heist thriller “Den of Thieves” was showing more traction than recent forecasts indicated with about $14 million at 2,432 sites.
