Too many gems...too many...some of my best gaming experiences.

Some that stand out to me are a few on the GOAT system SNES:

Breath of Fire 2
Secret of Mana
Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past

And of Course the GOAT:

Final Fantasy VII

Tales of Symphonia

Right now playing Breath of Fire 4 (PSN) and Xenoblade Chronicles (Wii) heard it was the best RPG this gen, so trying it out...pretty good so far.

Share those fire JRPGs

Secret of Mana was a very underrated game. Back in the 90s when game journalist where doing their best of list and Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past was usually number 1. I always wondered why Secret of Mana did not get the same amount of love, it had better graphics, music, and gameplay (3 player co-op) yet it rarely get mentioned.

I did enjoy playing Wild Arms, even if they did rip off a lot of elements from FFVI

I'm not understanding some of the dismissive posts in this thread.

I really didnt think that I had to make a clarification that appreciation is not limited to some form of time frame. Like you can only appreciate a game if it came out a year a two ago, or a thread has to be made contemporaneously with a game's release to appreciate it or the genre as a whole.

Many of the games I listed are universally accepted as some of the best games (not just RPGs) ever created, and the point of the thread was to elicit discourse about these and many games like them...fond memories, comparisons/contrasts, overlooked gems, etc. I'm sure there are many games comparable to the ones mentioned that I never played that someone could have dropped that I could have put on my radar. I never played the xenosaga series, star ocean series, or any final fantasy past 7.

And about this statement about they started with spark and now they just garbage. Let's not act like the current state of JRPGs isnt more about the western market (which drives the majority of video game sales) completely forsaking most genres for the first person shooter. And let's not act like there arent any JRPGs released currently that arent good or worth discussing, games like Last Story, Tales of Graces, Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance, Final Fantasy XIII-2, Xenoblade Chronicles, Dragon's Dogma etc.

But even so...let's say that JRPGs are wack now, and their 20+ year history isnt worth discussing, that's not stopping a motherfukker from coming in here to compare popular western RPGs like Mass Effect, Skyrim, Diablo 3, etc.

The time thing I wholeheartedly agree with. The Breath of Fire IV I copped on PSN was bought last year and I've hardly scratched the surface.
