Vlad's point is valid...buying a home for the overwhelming majority of people is a bad decision.

Its a money pit...and keeps you stuck in one place.

in the short term yes, its a money pit and a pain in the ass but over the long term its the best investment

in two years since i brought my condo ive gotten 30K in equity, 10 years from now it will probably by 100K, i dont see how any other investment can beat that

but like jay said owning a home is not necessarily an investment vehicle, so owning a house is not going to put cash in your pocket per se

it does not keep you in one place, if you want to leave just leave and have a property manager take care of it

1) stocks
2) investing time/money in yourself to build a business

are two viable options that can match or better the return in equity you see on a home
