Jay-Z: Kanye West Fought 'Magna Carta' Songs for 'Watch the Throne'

Jay-Z says Kanye West wanted songs from his newest album Magna Carta Holy Grail for their 2011 collaboration Watch the Throne, telling BBC Radio 1's Zane Lowe (as reported by NME) that the pair spent days arguing over the tracks. Jay-Z said the two had planned to jump right into their solo records – West released Yeezus about two weeks before Magna Carter Holy Grail – after finishing Watch the Throne.

"Soon as I thought we had wrapped up Watch the Throne, I made two records – I had 'Holy Grail' and 'Oceans' . . . and I played those records for Kanye," Jay-Z said. " And he was like, 'No, those have to go on Watch the Throne.'"

They wrangled over the tracks for four days before hashing it out. "Not like fighting," Jay-Z said. "Well, there was some pushing at one point but not between us, just everyone else got a little excited."
Jay-Z released Magna Carta Holy Grail last week. The album features contributions from Justin Timberlake, Beyoncé and Frank Ocean.

Although the album came out in 2011, It seems the recording process for the highly acclaimed joint album ”Watch The Throne” with Jay Z & Kanye West was a very hectic and stressful one as Jay Z reveals how uneasy it was. Speaking with Radio 1′s Zane Lowe, He said that the spat was over tracks he had saved for his next solo record that he thought weren’t right for them.

Jay Z: “We spent four days arguing about those records, I was explaining to him why it wasn’t right and I had an idea for making this album called Magna Carta Holy Grail. There was some pushing at one point but not between us, just everyone else got a little excited”.

During the recording of his latest album, Jay-Z did fall out with friend and producer Timbaland:

“The fall out happened at the end of the Blueprint 3 album, A couple of songs were getting leaked that were his songs and that whole thing just ruined the process. Everyone has to put egos aside for the sake of the project and he wasn’t accepting of that and that was almost like the last straw. When he came back, I saw a new Timbaland. He has this maturity and this growth and I was like, ‘Oh OK, this is going to work out”.

And he admitted he wasn’t against the idea of him touring with his wife, Beyonce:

“It’s always floating out there,” he said. “We just don’t want to make it a gimmick. It has to be the real thing and it’s slowly making sense as far as a tour, but not an album.”
