WBO middleweight boxing champion Peter Quillin (24-0...14 KO's) turnes down a 1.4 million dollar purse offered by ROC NATION sports entertainment for a September date with challenger Matey Korobov in pursuit of business relationship with super-promoter Al Haymon
The decision was made based on numerous factors, he said.
"Getting ready for a fight right after having a baby, how much would that be pulling from my enjoyment of that experience?" Quillin said. "I train out in California and they want to push that date on me?"
Quillin and wife Allison had a son, Joaquin Enriquez Quillin, on Aug. 23, right as the WBO was pushing for him to sign the contract, he said.
"If I'm going to sacrifice being away from him to be at camp it better be worth it," Quillin said. "I think about him and I almost start crying. I have to do things for him."
The amount Quillin passed up, $1.4 million for a fight with Russian Matt Korobov (24-0, 14 KOs), could be considered by many to be worth it, he said.
"For anyone who has never made a million dollars that's a lot of money to them but I've made close to that in one fight," Quillin said. "People don't think I've got something good coming after turning down that money?"
The fighter said his future is secure because his adviser, Al Haymon, has big plans.
The belt goes but the undefeated record stays -- Peter Quillin
"I don't know all the details about what's going to be going on," Quillin said. "But more importantly I have an open relationship of communicating with Al."
"He helped make Floyd Mayweather the biggest paid athlete in the world," Quillin said
"I've seen boxers fight for $500, it's silly. Al knows the biz of boxing. I'm not concerned about it."
One thing Quillin regrets about the situation is not getting the opportunity to work with Jay-Z's promotion company, Roc Nation Sports who had won a purse bid to put on the fight
.
"I hope Jay-Z understands the decision that I made and I hope to have an opportunity to work with him in the future."
