Most of the MC's that appear in a Top 10 GOAT list were never the hottest at any point in their career. Meanwhile, you'd rarely see 50 Cent, Jeezy, Nelly, Mase, or Rick Ross in a Top 10 list, so its really a dumb subject. Hottest =/= greatest. Same people who keep beating a dead horse with this point would be whining about Drake being #1 for multiple years.

Ludacris was not the hottest rapper in 2001.

Arguably he was. I can't think of a rapper more sought after for features. He was on a bunch of hit songs of other artists that year. He dropped Back For The First Time late 2000 and that carried over into 2001 specifically "Southern Hospitality". Then he dropped Word of Mouf late 2001. No solo rapper outsold Luda in 2001. He was either selling more than Ja Rule or they were selljng about the same amount.

Jay only entered the top 10 debates because of his numbers and business moves...it was never about his skills (cuz he was never the best in that aspect), it was never about the quality of his music.

And when you look really at it, there is an asterisk next to all his numbers (partnership, bought copies, never the hottest, a pop or rnb singer on all his important hits...)

False.

Hard Knock Life
Dirt Off Your Shoulders
Big Pimpin'
I Just Wanna Love Ya
Jigga My nikka
Izzo

If Jay Z entered these discussions based on numbers, business moves etc., why then aren't the following rappers ranked higher than him since they were selling more, had bigger singles, and one of them was making bigger business moves:

Nelly
Puff Daddy
Mase
Ludacris
Ja Rule
