There are people who say that Americans are not very astute on the topic of Black History. But there are some who say that those who complain are just persistent whiners and race baiters who will find a problem with any issue in front of them.

But what do you say when the so-called smartest people on the planet avoid Black History Month questions like they are the plague? This is what happened on the show Jeopardy! during a college panel that they had on the show. Of course the episode was all-white, which is what you’re usually going to get, but that doesn’t mean that the contestants can’t be enlightened on matters of race.


According to Jezebel.com, there were these categories: “International Cinema Showcase,” “Weather Verbs,” and “Kiwi Fauna.” The sixth category was “African American History.”

The players did all they could to avoid Black History, leaving the questions over to the side like the five year old who refuses to eat his green beans. What’s saddest about this episode, which you can view below, is that it explains why you hear so many incidents of college students doing disrespectful things to African Americans, like hanging nooses in their fraternity houses or having parties in blackface. It happens because even the brightest college students don’t know the first things about black history, mainly because their campuses never force them to learn it.

If black people were lined up on a show and asked to give answers to questions about white history, they’d nail them in a heart beat. Black cultural competency has been a matter of survival to people of color since we arrived on slave ships. So, we know more about white people than whites know about themselves. But when the situation is reversed, the answer is basically, “who gives a sh*t?”

I tried to look for it but I couldnt find it.

man the arrogance tho. we have to learn all american history, heck I even remember learning about native americans and tribes, but black history..which is american history......thats a sore topic, lets skip over that.

Then the same people talking about ...but but but why are they so mad. of course youre going to ask this stupid question you dont know shyt about the history.

None of them are black so it's not a big issue for me. The only issue is that, as stated in the article, we'd be able to answer "White American History" questions rather easily.

It should be what's good for the goose is good for the gander...

I'd be heartbroken to see black contestants up their avoiding our shyt though.

I blame the American school system more than the individuals TBH.

Most Americans dont know anything about black history besides us being victims of American oppression, if that.

actually its a pretty big issue, in order for things to change the majority group needs to be educated. if they are ignorant on the topic, they will think everything is fine and nothing needs to proceed forward. you know, kinda like whats been going on since the 80s......

To be fair it was the last column of questions....I chuckled as I typed this.
But here's an idea, and Jeopardy is in a position of influence here. Why not just ask "Black History" questions under the heading "American History"!?

south africans know african history. ask any white south african about the zulus, they know. before you say its different because they are IN africa, no, there is no reason for them to have learned it there either. when mandela came in, he pretty much shamed them into learning.

Its very possible. we just havent had this open dialogue to expose that there is ignorance on their part and there needs to be exposure.

we are already focusing on ourselves we always have been, but if the majority doesnt want you to win (be equal), ei black wallstreet, you will not. one thing I learned from the blue eye brown eye experiment is you have to put things into perspective and trigger emotion. in order to do that you have to let them know. ignoring this is backwards imo.
