It depends once the artiste wants. Some are chasing the bag playing the same game as the majors. Some want to keep their artistic integrity.

I think the biggest goal is the financial reward. Meaning, instead of having a label take the financial risk, you take the financial risk on yourself and whatever profit comes back is yours. Instead of having the label give you whatever share of the profit they think you deserve.
