80’s R&B star Damion Hall may have made headlines recently for proclaiming there is “no group greater than Guy,” but producer extraordinaire Jermaine Dupri is throwing his opinion in the chat by giving the crown to New Edition.
Still hot on the promo trail for his documentary ‘Magic City: An American Fantasy’ (set to premiere on STARZ on August 15), JD dropped by the ‘Joe & Jada’ podcast starring rappers Fat Joe and Jadakiss to dish on the project as well as his career-at-large.
Though his conversation with the duo was decorated by his regale of work with Usher(‘Confessions‘), Mariah Carey(‘Emancipation of Mimi’), Monica, Da Brat, TLC, and others, a surprising highlight came courtesy of tapping into the “greatest group ever” hot topic.
Undoubtedly a debate starter, press PLAYon the clip above to hear JD’s full homage to NE.

Despite their solo and group accomplishments, JD argued the sixsome – comprised of Bobby Brown, Ralph Tresvant, Johnny Gill, Ronnie Devoe, Ricky Bell, and Michael Bivins – is not given their due from critics or music historians.“New Edition is the greatest group in music history period. They’re the greatest group to ever come out – White, Black, I don’t care what it is. They’re the greatest group to ever come out,”he relayed before defending his argument. “Reason being, everybody went solo and went Platinum. This ain’t happen with the Jacksons, the Four Tops, the Temptations, the Backstreet Boys, or NSYNC.”
And while Joe and Jada refuted with their respective picks Boyz II Men and The Beatles, Jermaine stood his ground.“We should treat New Edition better; they are the greatest musical group to ever come out. I’m talking [better than] The Who, The Rolling Stones, all these artists and all these bands,”Dupri shared.
