The National Football League confirmed Thursday night that it has decided to move the Buffalo Bills game against the New York Jets to Detroit's Ford Field. It will be played at 7 p.m. Monday night.
Bills team President Russ Brandon said Thursday during a conference call with media that took place about two hours before the venue decision was made that the team was "working through a variety of logistics with the league," and that the only thing he could speak about was the already-made decision by the NFL to move the game out of Buffalo.
It was supposed to be a 1 p.m. Sunday kickoff at Ralph Wilson Stadium, but the historic snowstorm that has devastated the towns south of Buffalo made it impossible to play. "That wasn't an option at this point," said Brandon.
"Due to public safety concerns in light of the ongoing weather emergency in Western New York, Sunday's Jets-Bills game will not be played in Buffalo," said NFL spokesman Michael Signora.
That was clearly the opinion of New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo who said earlier in the day that it would be "impractical" to play in what is essentially a disaster area currently under a state of emergency.
There were reports throughout Thursday that potential sites for the game included Detroit, Washington, and Pittsburgh. All three NFL stadiums in those cities are available on Sunday and Monday.
