'Jim Just Isn't for Everybody'

Nearly everyone who has orbited in Harbaugh’s solar system for a length of time possesses a whopper of an anecdote about the new Michigan coach.

Frank Beamer has one. The Virginia Tech head coach is sitting on a porch overlooking a golf course in Reynolds Plantation, Georgia, on a tar-bubbling summer afternoon—a lazy, storytelling kind of afternoon. As he puts down a glass of lemonade on a table, he says he has a tale to tell. It might just be, he claims, the weirdest damn story of his entire coaching career.

Beamer leans back in his chair and loosens a memory from late 2010. The Hokies of Virginia Tech, where Beamer has coached for the last 28 autumns, were preparing to play Stanford in the Orange Bowl. A few days before the Jan. 3 game, Beamer met the Cardinal head coach—Harbaugh—at an event at a restaurant in Miami.

“After we take some pictures, we start talking, just the two of us,” Beamer said. “Jim says over and over how much respect he has for Georgia Tech. He must have said it five times. I’m just looking at him like, ‘Are you serious?’

“Finally, I’m joking with him and I say I can’t wait to tell my team that you called us Georgia Tech. Because, you know, we’re Virginia Tech.”

Harbaugh then threw his infamous shark expression at Beamer: mouth agape, eyes on fire, looking poised to chomp. Harbaugh’s assistants have seen this look for years; he sometimes holds it for about 30 seconds without speaking, causing everyone in eyeshot to wonder what is flowing through his mind—if anything.

Beamer continued to lock eyes with Harbaugh for a few moments, waiting for him to say something, anything. It may have been the most uncomfortable silence of Beamer’s life.

“Well,” Harbaugh finally told Beamer. “I can’t wait to tell my players that you said you were going to play Samford, not Stanford!” He then turned and walked away.

he reminds me of vince mcmahon stories. Guys who do not care about anything except for their field of work (football / wrestling). He went on his first vacation with his wife in like 15 years last month. He doesn't care about anything besides coaching football and thats all he does. He is borderline dangerous lol

FLASHBACK: Jim Harbaugh once broke his hand punching Jim Kelly

August 12, 2015 08:44 PM ET

After IK Emenkpali broke Geno Smith's jaw on Tuesday, a lot of people started wondering whether that was the first time a starting quarterback was injured during a fight.

It turns out the answer to that question is no.

In 1997, Jim Harbaugh was involved in a tussle that ended up sidelining him for almost a month.

Harbaugh's situation was slightly different than Smith's though because Harbaugh wasn't the one being punched, he was the one doing the punching.

The whole situation started in October 1997 when former Bills quarterback Jim Kelly -- in his first year out of football -- called Harbaugh a "baby" during a local pregame show in Buffalo, according to the Los Angeles Times.

As you can imagine, Harbaugh was not amused with the comments.

"Jim Kelly made some comments about me on a TV show in Buffalo. He basically said I was a baby, that I fake injuries," Harbaugh told Mitch Albom in 1997. "He said if he were still playing, he'd tell Buffalo players to hit me in the mouth and I'd get rattled."

As fate would have it, Kelly was scheduled to announce Harbaugh's game the first Sunday after he made the "baby" comment. At the time, Harbaugh was playing for the Colts.

The day before the game, Harbaugh decided to "crash an NBC production meeting" and that's when things escalated. :demonic:

"Well, [Kelly] was doing a game in San Diego, and I wanted to ask him where he was coming from with those comments,:youngsabo:" Harbaugh explained. "We went into a room and started talking about it. He said, 'I call it the way I see it.' One thing led to another. :ld: I hit him. I threw a couple of punches. Sometimes you have to stand up for what you believe in."

After the punch, Harbaugh knew right away that something didn't feel right.

"I broke the bone while hitting him," Harbaugh said in 1997.

Harbaugh would miss the Colts' next three games after the injury and because the team placed him on the Non-Football Injury list, he missed out on three paychecks, which were estimated to be $140,000 each.

The moral of the story: Never question Harbaugh's toughness.

That time Jim Harbaugh broke his hand punching Jim Kelly

The incident took place in October 1997, when a frustrated Harbaugh took offense to some comments about his toughness on the field from Kelly -- who was working as an analyst at the time.

Kelly was doing television work for a local station in Buffalo at the time, and made various comments about how Harbaugh "overdramatized" his injuries. He also referred to the quarterback as a "baby" on a number of occasions.

Harbaugh -- whose Colts were 0-7 at the time -- was scheduled to miss a game in San Diego due to an injury, so he entered an NBC production meeting and demanded an apology from Kelly for his comments. When he didn't get one, he shoved him into a wall and a dustup followed.

Harbaugh's punch broke a bone in his hand and sidelined him for a month, and the Colts finished the season 3-13. The following February, Harbaugh was traded to the Baltimore Ravens.

Was he apologetic?

It's Jim Harbaugh. What do you think?

"I regret throwing the punch, but I felt I had to do something since my toughness was being questioned," Harbaugh said at the time, per The Star. "I regret that I have a crack in one of my bones in my hand."
