Hey Fam. I need y’all insight. I was offered a position with an Agency in Oakland Ca. There’s an 8% bump from my current salary for the new position’s starting salary.

Any and all feedback from current and past Bay Area folks is greatly appreciated.

I know taxes are a bytch 9.3% for my bracket… :sadcam:

I was told gas is a mfer :mjcry:

If I make the move I will be renting. Any suggested areas? I know it’s gonna cost me :francis:

If I move the goal is to live near a BART station. The Agency is offing free public transportation. :yeshrug:

I currently own a home in Annapolis, MD but work in DC.

You black? If so, gonna be day and night between the black population here in the DMV and the Bay Area. Also, the social scene ain’t no where near as lit, don’t know your age or what you’re into, but wanted to put that out there

Is that the final offer? I’d counter whatever they offered and aim for a 12% raise, you might end up with 10% but that’s kinda my bare minimum I need to take a new job, especially in a more expensive area

As for living by Bart in Oakland, I’d look in the temescal or Longfellow neighborhoods to be near MacArthur Bart, around the lake to be by lakeshore Bart, or near fruitvale - west Oakland is cool but there’s nothing nearby so you’d need to drive and/or get out your neighborhood for everything during the weekend or after work hours. Don’t waste money living in uptown/downtown

And yes, taxes and gas are a bytch, also a lot of restaurants have an additional fee to cover health care for their workers.

if you’re into outdoor stuff tho, the bay is GOAT, perfect weather year round. There’s also a lot of microclimates. From SF to 20 miles East you can get anything from 60 with fog to 97 and clear skies. The food, produce and water is all better quality and tasting in the bay too.

Anyway, let me know if you got other questions. Oakland native but moved away last fall to DC, so we’ve swapped

Funny, I'm in the DMV and also got a role in the Bay (on the peninsula though). Salary bump was closer to 23% when you adjust for CoL. I was out in the Bay two weekends ago looking at places and originally I was dead set on Oakland, but that commute to the peninsula either over the Bay Bridge or San Mateo bridge had me like :hubie:

I did see some nice places in Jack London Square. I think that's pretty close to the BART. Idk what kind of car you drive but you may want to consider a hybrid. Lowest gas prices I saw out there was like $3.99 for regular all the way in Hayward. $4.20-$4.50 was pretty common.

But Dora probably has better insight.

Can you expand on the bolded? Like how are the black population's different. I know DMV has more of a professional black/buppie crowd but I'm wondering if there's anything else to know :patrice:

This was kind of annoying tbh. I'd be in North SF and need a light jacket/windbreaker. But then I'll drive to see family in Brentwood and it'd be sweltering. Like damn, a breh gotta move around town with a 4 season change of clothes in the trunk :pachaha:

But the outdoorsy stuff is definitely really nice.

Oakland is on fire with crime right now. That said Oakland is gentrified for better or for worse. rent is at an all time high and alot of the culture is gone. If you making good bread and find a good affordable spot why not. would you be interested in renting your house out ?

We don’t dress up in the bay, people definitely dress more out here in addition to having jobs that require more formal business attire. Of course there’s a much smaller black population and large part of it isn’t really the educated crowd. Lastly, whereas there’s a million happy hours, parties during the week, day parties and brunches...it ain’t really poppin like that in the bay. You got people congregating at the lake and a handful of places you know people will be Friday or Saturday night, but during the week, it’s wack

If I make the move I would prefer to rent my TH house. I need all the tax breaks I can get.

Is Oakland similar to say a Baltimore?

Funny that you would say that because when I did the video conference interview I was interviewed by an older while lady, and older Indian guy and an older Asian lady. I just knew I wasn’t gonna get the offer based on my preconceived misjudgment. Even though I thought I did just okay on the interview. :manny:

Lol, we ain’t as dusty as Baltimore. But a lot of kids who go away for school don’t come back, plus gentrification, plus the migration back down south...it’s a small buppie/black professional crowd, and it’s also spread out since a lot of jobs are either in the peninsula, South Bay, or SF

From what Dora said about the professional class there may be similarities. Many of the black professionals leave Bmore for DC. Outside of nursing, I’m not sure what field blacks really place well in over here.

But most, if not all of the city political positions are held by blacks....

outside Oakland, where else do you find a large black population.

oakland is not similar to baltimore. silver springs is the only place thats given me a similar feel. natives are holding on due to being priced out, violence is sky high due to ppp and edd bout to be over and the weed/hustle game is fukked. a lot of good restaurants, clubs , etc are closed down. that said oakland can still be pretty cool. the return on investment just doesnt make sense anymore. I wouldnt suggest unless your making 100k or more

“large” is very relative...but not really in areas transplants are likely to live nor visit. Vallejo, Richmond, Pittsburg and Antioch.
