Abraham is suffering from severe memory loss and has been for well over a year, sources said. Abraham believes he needs to take time to get well.
Arizona placed him on leave, freeing up a temporary roster exemption that the team used to re-sign linebacker Marcus Benard.
Abraham, 36, has 133.5 sacks, the most among active players and ninth on the all-time list, in 192 career games with the New York Jets,Atlanta Falcons and Cardinals.
He was arrested June 29 and charged with DUI after officers found Abraham asleep behind the wheel of his black Dodge Challenger at an intersection in Brookhaven, Georgia. He refused to take an alcohol breath test. His arraignment in that case is scheduled for Oct. 10.
Abraham missed most of the first three weeks of the Cardinals' training camp before reporting Aug. 14. He spent time in a rehab facility while he was away from the team.
