Not mad at his decision, but I am intrigued by what this company is doing.

They're gonna own so many peoples catalogs and be getting all future earnings on that. With streaming, vinyl and CD sales increasing, they gon be eating good.

See Byron Allen or the countless other millionaires who can’t get what they want done in entertainment
There’s nuance here of course. I’m sure there are industries where the ultra wealthy are unable to take their capital and bend those industries to their will, but to just flat out say money doesn’t equal power remains :mjlol:

If these deals wasn't lucrative these companies wouldn't be offering to buy the rights, that's all I'll say.
Undoubtedly, some will and some won’t.
Also, just because a company buys a catalog and ultimately makes more with it than what they paid the artist, doesn’t necessarily mean it was a bad deal for the artist. It depends on time and whether the artist had the same opportunities the company has to maximize revenue with the catalog.

Checked my Spotify dashboard, John is pulling in around 3 million streams a day, 90-100 milly a month....comes out to 360k but if we extrapolate those to the others(iTunes/Pandora/Amazon Music/Tidal, etc), give or take, that is 2 milly a month via streams.

But if he has to share songwriting/publishing credits, that could be a lot less.

His TV and Film credits probably are a bit more...
Most artists don't even make $1 per stream.

How do you see the Spotify dashboard? :ohhh:
Also, might not be 2 million per month based on Spotify’s market share (I believe they are the biggest). We just don’t have enough information to drill down to numbers like that. I appreciate what you’re doing though :salute:

My Pops Forever RIP
This is the only case I don’t support because at his current trajectory as a safe likable artist who can make Christmas albums and host awards shows for decades…there’s still potential to build on your catalog while getting free promo. He also has young children and he himself is young. It’s not like an older artist simplifying a complex royalty situation for his grown children.

You never know which old John Legend song is gonna gain more popularity in a movie, ad, etc.

He makes crazy money just off being a judge on The Voice. The only thing more secure at NBC than John Legend is the peacock. He'll be ok. This is just one aspect of his career that he cashed out on. It's not as if he traded his ability to make music for this lump sum.

Artists are realizing that their catalog is no different than start-up companies and in many cases, those companies are designed to one day be bought out by a bigger company for a significant fee.
Probably needs the money.
John Legend is far from broke.

Once again we got posters questioning decisions from artist who’s been in the game for decades and know exactly how much they’re bringing in every year from their catalog.
:wow:

What you mean?! a real coli breh doesn't need to be in the game to know about it's inner workings, a real coli breh knows more than John Legends lawyers and advisors

John Legend is far from broke.

You don’t know his finances. You don’t know his debt levels.

The company itself may not turn a profit for decades. All that matters is the company heads ability to convince investors of their ability to acquire a significant amount of rights for which they can then increase the licensing costs, have an exclusive platform for the masses to consume the music, etc. If you take the long view, you can see how it can be lucrative. Whether it works out or not is a different story.
