Unless he just pisses his money away this is nothing. Plus John(and his square face wife) have various other revenue sources. Coli nikkas who never made more than 60k kill me :mjlol:
Plus they acting like he can't take the money he made off this sale and invest it and make even more money. We don't know what his royalty and publishing checks look like to know if this is a smart idea or not yet nikkas want to have opinions on shyt

Folk ain’t buying CDs and albums no more for 10.99 to 15.99 add into the fact in order to sign to a label you gotta sign a 360 deal.. established artist lookin at the long game.. Can’t really tour like that.. so why not cash out now and sell your previous work for millions and just start a new catalog

I’m rational and reasonable here.

The fact that I don’t like him is just an addendum to my point.
Ya know, just because, i’ll reply and continue

They don’t use cakes and pastries as movie and commercial soundtracks. They don’t use pies as nfts or whatever new technology is around the corner.

&

Maybe I could’ve made the same deals with the cakes that the company buying my recipes would make.

Maybe I should’ve invested my pie money better or maybe made more bakeries instead of sitting on my c00n spirit light brite ass with my moonface Asian wife.
You’re missing the metaphor on some level

four restaraunts = his album catalog
His recipes = his writing credits
His danish and cupcakes = green light, ordinary people, the hits
His new recipes = the albums you dont listen to and wont next time he drops

again you are a baker (a recording artist) and make $1,000,000/yr (the amount doesnt matter) from your restaraunts. In fact, sometimes you actually let people use your recipes for their weddings and events (movies, nfts, soundtracks), and it works well but its tough to keep track of. And you’re a chef...you arent in the business of running a catering company...and in fact need to pay someone to manage it well, and someone to audit them.

this could go on forever...or your recipes could just be viewed as tired one day, or everyone decides your pastries dont taste well..or maybe you have a scandal and nobody goes to your catering company or bakery any more, and that dries up....

Or

i can give you $75,000,000 right now

is it still stupid?

Exactly this.
Guaranteed money > Dreams of empire building

The whole hustle and grind thing looks great on social media posts and sounds good talking about, but the reality is years, sometimes decades of trial and error, factors and intangibles out of your control falling into place

Not everyone is meant to be business minded or moguls-to-be. Some brehs just want the cheque now and there's nothing wrong with that
Facts. nikkas only care about masters ownership because Jay z said it in a song.

when Hov and B sell theirs one day I’ll be lmao.

artists haven't done shows in damn near 3 years

Them pockets going skinny

I stopped listening to thecoli when they shytted on Wayne for selling his catalog.
He sold his catalog because he was broke, which he will probably end up again

First, i question in what you’re basing that in. Can you provide evidence of artists with writing credits similar to John legend getting loballed?

i believe he has a pretty good sense as to how much money he can and has made from his own music, and has a better understanding of the ability to collect and earn in the same way going forward than you and I.

they’re getting that generational wealth now, rather than waiting for it during those generations with technology and rights rules changing over that time

also, youre not talking about a brand name like heinz or ford or even a tangible patent...we’re talking about music...what power are you talking about that the pile of money legend is getting won’t provide?
Johnny Cash and Jerry Lee Lewis entire catalogs sold for $30 million. Why on earth would John Legend be worth 150% more?

I’m sure he made a sound decision based on his finances. However, we as black folks need to wonder why we’re always so eager to give away ownership and why others are always so willing to take it.

Money doesn’t equal power. I can have $0 but if I own land in the middle of an area Amazon wants to build a warehouse, I’m in a position to get some things done for myself and others.

nikkas in here talmbout generational wealth, like how the fukk is 100 million plus not generational wealth :pachaha: and they're still gonna be working on top of that

The problem with just having 100 million and generating a few mil a year is taxation. You aren't just gonna have 100 Ms in the bank for 20-30 years, you'll lose it over time, plus inflation is a factor over the years.

You'd rather have revenue streams that will eventually add up to 100 Ms than just have 100 Ms, generally.

Hey, you a are chef, and you specialize in cakes and pastries

you are very successful, and make literally $1,000,000 a year from your 4 bakeries. You opened the first one in 2003.

You’ve been making the ocassional new cake recipe and some people like them, but people come to your bakeries for the same danish and cupcake usually. The new ones arent as successful.

i will pay you $75,000,000 for your recipes, and the restaurants which will remain the same, you just walk away.

What is your decision?

Sold!

The money he’s getting will set his family up for 4 lifetimes. Yes it’s worth holding on but there gets to be a point where the money you are being offered outweighs all those bullshyt inspirational posts people put on social media.

He is young and a very dumb move, his family would see royalties well into the second half of the 21st century but sold it all for short-term gain.

Now we are going to hear John Legend songs in Burger Commercials smh

Damn near everyone is selling their catalog because the current valuations are massively inflated. I've read they're getting 10-20 times what they were previously worth. Artists are cashing out before the bubble pops.

Touring isn't as reliable in the Covid era. Bruce Springsteen just sold his catalog and he's always made huge amounts off concerts.

Another reason they sell is they only pay a 20% capital gains gains tax vs paying capital gains + income tax. Bob Dylan supposedly saved around $90 million by selling his catalog.

Do any of ya'll know what it takes to actually get the most out of your catalog while you own it?

Number one, once you dead, you're family is gonna fukk it up--see Aaliyah's new album (:hhh:No Timb, Missy or Ginuwine involved) & Prince music being in car commericals like the year he died

Two, ppl don't have the juice to get the right licensing deals and what not

I think ya'll think owning your music means you sit back and ALL the money from your music getting played is funneled to you and that couldn't be further from the truth

Unless the music industry radically changes soon, the level of revenue generated by catalogues will wither away to
nothing due to the minuscule payments coming from streaming platforms.

These two posts kinda shed light on what Im tryina find out

These investors prolly are being re-assured by whatever company is gonna manage these assets that they will be able to increase profits via whatever commercial channels they will use to do so

These music catalogue management companies gotta have executives coming from the biggest ad / commercial companies there are n thats how they will ensure thru their connections that the music rights will be sold at the right price

Something the artists themselves wouldnt be able to accomplish...

This happens all the time in the financial world: new investors coming in and taking over a company (music catalogue in this case), changing management n squeezing every penny they can out of this business

My answer would vary depending on my age, a younger me would probably say no but a older me would looking towards retirement and would probably be tired of same old routine everyday
