NationStates is a free online nation simulation and roleplaying game that lets you create and manage your own fictional country. It's part political simulator, part world-building experiment, and part community roleplay.
Here’s how it works:
Core Gameplay
You start by:
- Creating a country – You decide on things like the name, flag, government type, national animal, motto, and other cultural features.
- Answering policy issues – Every day (or more frequently if you want), you're presented with realistic or satirical policy dilemmas. How you respond shapes your nation's laws, economy, political freedoms, and civil rights.
- Example: “A rise in crime has prompted calls for increased surveillance. Do you install more cameras, invest in education, or declare martial law?”
- Your choices influence stats like:
- Economy
- Civil Rights
- Political Freedoms
- National Rankings (e.g., happiest, most authoritarian, etc.)
Roleplaying & World-Building
- You can join regions, which are like countries or continents in the world of NationStates. Some are peaceful communities; others simulate political alliances, wars, or even United Nations-style diplomacy.
- Some players write elaborate backstories, news articles, constitutions, or even military histories for their nations.
- There’s a World Assembly (WA) – a sort of in-game United Nations where members vote on international laws and resolutions. You can also draft and submit your own.
Style & Vibe
- Originally created by author Max Barry in 2002 to promote his novel Jennifer Government, NationStates evolved into a long-running, community-driven sandbox for political experimentation.
- It ranges from serious political strategy to absurdist comedy, depending on your play style. You can roleplay a utopian democracy, a banana republic, a theocratic empire, or a libertarian techno-anarchist state.
